....... it's crying time again.

2 songs by Buck Owens. He died last Saturday, in his sleep - in his own bed after performing Friday night at The Crystal Palace ( his showcase - aka the Grand Ol Opry of the West ) here in Bakersfield. Today he will be laid to rest. This entire week has beenna time of mourning here in Bakersfield. That mixed with the crap that life's been throwing out , plus the weather has been soggy and sad.... The gloom is pouring out of the pores of most Bakersfieldians. BUT.... Buck will be missed, ALOT!!!

Before I moved here I liked Buck Owens, actually grew up on his music and watching Hee Haw with my parents back in the 70's. He gave Dwight Yoakham a nice push into the lime light when he re recorded his song "Streets of Bakersfield" as a duet with Dwight. Before that Dwight had a following but he wasn't mainstream, he was considered "Punk -a- Billy" or " Psycho Rock a Billy" - whatever it was I loved it. I loved me some Dwight Yoakham back in the late 80's when he played little clubs off Sunset. The "Streets of Bakersfield" duet with Buck in 1988 really put DY on the map. Once I moved to Bakersfield - against my will almost ( as some of you will remember ) - I had to check out Dwight's memorablia at Buck Owen's Crystal Palace... what a trip. That place seriously is the Nashville of the West. If you ever HAVE to go to Bakersfield for business or anything CHECK IT OUT!!

After a while Dwight had a gig at the Crystal Palace, we went and it was awesome... Buck was a BLAST! That prompted my curiousity.... who the heck was Buck Owens....I don't really know, but what I do know is awesome

~ he gave 10% of his yearly income to both his church and the SCPA

~ he owned the town newspaper - and gave every high school in town 750 free copies EVERY day, so the students and teachers could be encouraged to read and be informed.

~ he owned 2 television stations in town, each having lot's of give aways, teacher of the month ( with $1,000 cash for the classroom ), bi yearly Community Hero's awards, quarterly food drives outside the stations that packed ALL of the food banks in the county plus some in LA and Kings County.

~ he owned 2 radio staions here... both doing similiar things to the TV stations, plus playing "family friendly" music, news and commentary.

~ he was BIG on mamograms. In 1990 ( I believe, I wasn't here... I was still in the OC ) he paid for EVERY WOMAN in BAKERSFIELD and the SURROUNDING AREA to get a free mamogram... I read it was 42,000+ woman and any of them without suffficient insurance who had a lump... Buck paid for thier treatment. Still every year he gave money to be used towards mamograms for the uncovered.

~ He gave everywhere it seemed.....

The schools, including Cal State
The SPCA
The local Blood Bank
The Boys and Girls club
The scouts ( boys and girls)
State Firemans Association
Lords Little Angles ( they pay for families to bury thier young when they don't have money for a funeral )
All kinds of Music and Art programs

So GOODBYE, Buck Owens .... you'll be missed here in Bakersfield, and across the world by your many friends.....
